Tower Hamlets Labour Fighting for a cleaner, safer, fairer Tower Hamlets
2019 Anniversary Achievements
One year on from the local elections in Tower Hamlets
Here are just a few of the things we've been working on over the last year
- Our WorkPath programme supported over 1,100 residents into work last year
- Over 800 new affordable homes were built in Tower Hamlets in 17/18 – more than almost else anywhere in the country. And we’re making major progress on delivering 2000 new council homes. We’re also investing £332m for new council housing schemes and temporary accommodation
- We’re investing £1.7m in a new team of ASB enforcement officers to keep our streets safe on top of the additional police officers already funded by the council
- Council funded police officers supported Operation Continuum which led to 190 drug dealers being arrested and referred almost 100 users to drug treatment last year
- We’ve invested an extra £2.5m into our waste service and new graffiti team to keep Tower Hamlets clean
- At our budget meeting in February, we agreed a £4.9m investment in Early Years and high quality childcare and additional support for our schools
- Protecting funding for free school meals for and provided 20,000 meals in school holidays to tackle holiday hunger
- We’re expanding our flagship Tackling Poverty Fund to help protect residents against the worst of the Tory austerity agenda
- We’ve kept all our libraries, Idea Stores, leisure centres and children’s centres open, despite massive government cuts to our funding
- We recognise the importance of cleaning up our environment, which is why we’ve declared a climate emergency and have committed to work towards being a carbon neutral borough by 2025
