Tower Hamlets tops the leaderboard for genuinely affordable home completions

New statistics released by City Hall last week (14th May) show that 1,562 affordable homes were completed in Tower Hamlets as part of GLA housing programmes in the year ending 31st March 2020, the highest level of any London borough. Throughout the same period, 758 new affordable homes were also started in the borough.

The new figures also show that over 500 of these new completed homes are at social rent levels, also the highest level in London.

Across the capital, a record number of more than 17,000 affordable homes were started on London sites through GLA housing programmes in 2019/20, with more council homes started than in any year for more than three decades, despite two years of uncertainty caused by the prospect of a no-deal Brexit and Covid-19 restrictions impacting on the final weeks of the financial year.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs said: “I’m really pleased to see these new figures which show that Tower Hamlets has topped the leaderboard of new affordable homes completed. We work very closely with our colleagues at City Hall to ensure that much-needed new affordable homes are delivered in our borough, and the figures show that our work is paying off.

“Tower Hamlets is right on the frontline of the Tory-made housing crisis, but the close partnership between Labour in the Town Hall and Labour in City Hall makes a real difference for our residents and enables us to deliver these desperately needed new homes.”

“We face enormous challenges over the coming years if we are to continue delivering new homes as the coronavirus crisis continues. We will need to work with our partners more closely than ever, and we’ll need Government to give us with the resources we need to continue providing new homes for Tower Hamlets.”

Cllr Rachel Blake, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Planning, Air Quality and Tackling Poverty, said: “Providing new affordable and council homes is a top priority for us as a council and it’s a vital part of our work, so it’s fantastic to see these new figures. Each one of these new homes will make a huge difference in our borough, and the record-breaking figures across London shows the difference that Labour can make.  The coronavirus crisis exposes just how important a decent, secure home is – now more than ever we need to build more genuinely affordable homes to support overcrowded and homeless households.”|New statistics released by City Hall last week (14th May) show that 1,562 affordable homes were completed in Tower Hamlets as part of GLA housing programmes in the year ending 31st March 2020, the highest level of any London borough.
