Statement from the Tower Hamlets Labour Group

The Daily Mail’s attack on Kobi Nazrul Primary School is nothing more than fearmongering dressed up as news. Ignoring the school’s “Good” Ofsted rating and its test scores above the London and national averages, the article seeks to divide our community by focusing on the fact that pupils learn English as an additional language.

Tower Hamlets is one of the most diverse places in Britain, and that diversity is our strength. Our children bring with them a world of cultures, languages and experiences – and they thrive. Kobi Nazrul’s success is proof that our schools can deliver outstanding education when we invest in every child, regardless of where they or their families come from.

We all witnessed last year’s disturbances in England and the recent unrest in Northern Ireland. These are not isolated events – they are the predictable outcome of relentless, toxic rhetoric aimed at immigrants and minorities. When you demonise people, you risk inciting violence.

We stand firmly behind Kobi Nazrul Primary, its students, staff and families. We reject any attempt to belittle our schools or our borough.

To the media: report the facts, celebrate our achievements, and stop turning our communities into clickbait.
