For Immediate Release
Tower Hamlets Labour Group is delighted to announce that Councillor Sirajul Islam has been chosen to stand as our mayoral candidate in the 2026 local elections. With deep roots in our borough and a lifetime of service to its people, Sirajul brings both passion and proven leadership to this role.
Councillor Islam said:
“I have been a resident of Bethnal Green East for almost 40 years, serving as a Labour Councillor since 2001 when I first stood in a by-election. I have been fortunate to raise all of my children here and have them attend local schools. Over the years I’ve held various senior positions within the Council, including Statutory Deputy Mayor, and I currently serve as Leader of the Labour Group. I am passionate about local issues and committed to being available for all constituents. Having grown up and built my family in Tower Hamlets, I know what it takes to deliver real change for our communities.”
Tower Hamlets Deputy Labour Group Leader Cllr. Mufeedah Bustin commented,
“Sirajul’s unwavering dedication to our borough, from his decades in Bethnal Green East to his tenure as Deputy Mayor and Group Leader, makes him the ideal candidate to lead us into 2026. His vision is rooted in real experience and community solidarity, and I have no doubt he will inspire voters across Tower Hamlets.”
Over the coming months, Sirajul and the Tower Hamlets Labour team will be engaging with residents, community organisations, faith groups, and local businesses to refine and expand upon these plans. Together, we will build a fairer, greener, and more prosperous future for every corner of our borough.
