Tower Hamlets Labour Fighting for a cleaner, safer, fairer Tower Hamlets
Commenting on the BBC’s announcement that free TV licences for up to 3.7m pensioners are being scrapped:
Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs said: “It’s very disappointing that the BBC has decided to scrap free TV licences for older people, especially given that this goes against a Conservative manifesto pledge. This is a cut to some of the most vulnerable people in our society who would be completely isolated without their television. I hope the government reverses the decision and honours its manifesto commitment.”
Councillor Denise Jones, Older People’s Champion, said: “Tackling loneliness is a key priority in Tower Hamlets, with a focus on reducing social isolation amongst our elderly residents. By scrapping the free TV licence the government is taking away a key lifeline for many of our older people.”
