IFS Report on School Funding

Commenting on new IFS analysis released yesterday (18 June 2019), ‘Extra spending on education in England’:

Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs said: “This is the latest evidence which shows the scale of cuts to school budgets over the last decade, with per pupil funding down by 8% in real terms.

“Schools in Tower Hamlets have made enormous progress over the last twenty years, but with our schools facing an urgent funding crisis all this progress is put at very real risk.

“What’s even more concerning is that the government has no plan to tackle the crisis, as the government’s 2018 Budget implied even more cuts to schools over the coming years.”

Councillor Danny Hassell, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Young People, said: “The impartial report from the IFS highlights just how much schools, sixth forms and further education colleges have been hit by Tory austerity. There is a national crisis in school funding and it’s taking its toll locally in Tower Hamlets, where 81 out of 83 schools have suffered cuts to per pupil funding.”
