Commenting on the Chancellor’s Levelling Up fund announcement which puts Tower Hamlets in the lowest category of need, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs said:

“Despite six in ten children growing up in poverty in Tower Hamlets, Rushi Sunak believes we are the lowest priority for his ‘levelling up’ fund designed to target places with the highest levels of need.

“It’s hard to comprehend how areas with deep deprivation like Tower Hamlets could be considered in less need than the Chancellor’s own constituency which is one of the least deprived in the country.

“The Government’s levelling up agenda increasingly looks like little more than an attempt to syphon off money for Tory constituencies while deprived areas like Tower Hamlets are left behind.”
