Responding to the Chancellor’s Budget 2021, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs said:
“Today the Chancellor’s budget pledged a ‘new economy’ but it sounded like the same old Tories to me. Rishi Sunak is giving with one hand having taken away with the other, and the Tories have spent the last decade slashing funding for public services.
“Residents in Tower Hamlets have been hit hard by the government’s cut to Universal Credit, the end of furlough, rising food bills and energy prices, with rising National Insurance contributions to follow.
“Your Labour council will continue to do what it can to support people through our universal Free School Meals programme, the Covid Recovery Fund, holiday hunger schemes, our council tax reduction scheme which protects the poorest from having to pay council tax, and more, as well as by doing our best to protect vital council services from Tory cuts.”
