The Tower Hamlets Labour Campaign to ‘Save Our Bus Routes’ in Tower Hamlets has resulted in a big success for local residents as the Mayor of London has today announced that local bus Routes D3 and D7 will not close.

The campaign to ‘Save the Bus Routes’ was headed by Tower Hamlets Labour after Cllr Sirajul Islam, the Leader of the Tower Hamlets Labour Group and Unmesh Desai AM, Labour London Assembly Member for the City and East wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport for London back in June to express concern about the Government’s refusal to provide TfL with a fair funding deal, and to request the Government work with the Mayor of London to protect public transport in London.

Hundreds of local residents signed the petition from Tower Hamlets Labour before the consultation’s deadline of 7th August which called for buses in Tower Hamlets, such as Bus Routes D3 and D7, to be protected in the face of Conservative Government cuts to Transport for London’s budget. Today’s announcement from the Mayor of London is a huge success for local residents.

Leader of the Tower Hamlets Labour Group, Cllr Sirajul Islam said,

“I am extremely happy about this victory for our local residents. Residents in Tower Hamlets rely heavily on bus routes such as the D7 and D3, whether they are going to work or going to the shops, and they create a lifeline for vulnerable people to visit family and friends or attend GP and hospital appointments.

I am proud that the Mayor of London has successfully fought against Tory inaction on this important issue and ensured that our local bus services in Tower Hamlets are protected.”

Labour London Assembly Member for City and East, Unmesh Desai AM said:

“My Labour colleagues and I have spent months pushing the Conservative Government for a long-term funding deal for Transport for London to ensure our local bus services stay protected which is a lifeline for residents in the borough.

“I am pleased the Mayor of London has listened to the concerns of local residents and has fought against Tory inaction to ensure the D7 and D3 are saved.”
