Labour’s first Budget sets a clear path to deliver the change that families and businesses in Tower Hamlets urgently need. Alongside increased funding for the NHS, a higher minimum wage, and new measures to reduce homelessness, the Chancellor announced additional support for councils in communities like Tower Hamlets, including:
- £500 million to repair a million extra potholes annually
- Funding for 5,000 more affordable homes
- £230 million to tackle homelessness
Responding to the Budget, Labour’s Cllr Sirajul Islam, Leader of TH Labour Group said:
“This is a budget to fix the foundations and deliver on the promise of change that families and businesses in Tower Hamlets so desperately need. Today, the Chancellor focused on people’s priorities – getting us out of the mess the Conservatives left us in.”
“That means protection for working people, funding to reduce waiting lists and support our NHS, and real investment to rebuild Britain. But it also means genuine help for communities like Tower Hamlets.”
“Thanks to Labour’s budget, we’ll see hundreds of millions allocated to repairing our roads, building a new generation of affordable homes, and tackling homelessness head-on.”
“Britain is a great country – but for 14 long years, the Conservatives ran it into the ground. Now, with this budget, Labour is getting Britain back on track and working to bring about meaningful change.”
Delivering on Labour’s Promise for Tower Hamlets: Fixing the Foundations for a Better Future
Road Maintenance and Potholes
- Over £1.6 billion has been committed to fix local roads across the UK, fulfilling Labour’s commitment to repair a million more potholes a year.
- A £500 million increase in funding will go towards repairing local roads, an almost 50% rise from the previous government’s commitment, directly benefiting residents and commuters in Tower Hamlets.
- This funding will enable councils not only to fix existing damage but also to invest in preventative measures, ensuring roads remain in good condition and residents avoid costly car repairs – estimated to save up to £460 per household annually.
Affordable Homes Programme: Building for the Future
- The Chancellor’s Budget includes an immediate injection of £500 million into the Affordable Homes Programme, with the aim to create up to 5,000 new social and affordable homes.
- Tower Hamlets is set to benefit from this increase in housing investment, providing safe and affordable housing for families and individuals who need it most.
- This investment is part of Labour’s commitment to addressing the housing crisis, supporting a new generation of homes and building the foundation for long-term prosperity in our borough.
Tackling Homelessness
- With £230 million in new funding, Labour’s Budget focuses on preventing the rise of families in temporary accommodation and reducing rough sleeping across the country.
- Tower Hamlets, which has seen an increase in housing insecurity, will benefit from this funding to support local initiatives, ensuring that families have stable housing and that homelessness is addressed with long-term solutions.
