£59 million cash injection from Labour for new school on Isle of Dogs

Cllr Sirajul Islam, Leader of the Tower Hamlets Labour Group and Labour’s candidate for Mayor of Tower Hamlets, has welcomed the Labour Government’s announcement that Tower Hamlets will receive £59 million worth of investment for a new building for Canary Wharf Crossharbour College.

Under the Conservative government, the school system was stripped of vital investment that had been brought in by the previous Labour Government.

That squeeze on resources has put real pressure on councils and public services, including schools here in Tower Hamlets.

But this announcement from the Labour Government will give local children the best chance in life with state-of-the-art facilities and learning spaces, turning the tide on both the Tories’ and Lutfur Rahman’s Aspire’s neglect of services on the Island.

This investment is part of a nation-wide funding commitment to tackle the damage that the Conservatives caused to schools across the country. Over 50 schools a year will see investment as part of the programme, ensuring that both children and staff are equipped to succeed.

Josh MacAlister MP, Minister for Children, Families and Wellbeing said:

“This project should have been delivered years ago. Instead, it was delayed by Conservative underfunding.

Labour is now putting that right with a £50m-plus investment that means better facilities, greater certainty for parents, and shows genuine commitment to delivering for young people in this country.”

Cllr Sirajul Islam,  Leader of the Tower Hamlets Labour Group and Labour’s candidate for Mayor of Tower Hamlets said:

With significant growth on the Isle of Dogs, this new building at Canary Wharf Crossharbour College will provide modern learning spaces and ensure our children have the best start in life.

The Island’s population continues to grow so fast and it is Labour working to get the infrastructure needed and investing in our children’s future.”

Cllr Mufeedah Bustin, Deputy Leader of the Labour Group and councillor for Island Gardens said:

“When Mayor Lutfur Rahman cancelled £50 million of funding for George Green’s School, it caused uncertainty and concern for families on the Isle of Dogs. He has never given a good reason for this. Whilst this news from the government is welcome, we cannot let Mayor Rahman off the hook: his council needs to deliver for local schools so that more young people from the Island will be able to go to school locally.

I’m pleased that the Labour government has delivered for parents and students at Canary Wharf College. My colleagues and I will be working to ensure this funding becomes a reality as soon as possible.”
